Andrew Foster, an English singer/songwriter, is a busy bee.He writes songs as if they were pouring out.In 2007 he released 3 EP's.You wonder why he didn't wait for some time and release a full CD,it's a question that doesn't have an answer. He got addicted to music and songwriting as he fell in love with the work of bands as Oasis or Nirvana.Today we'll have a closer look at 2 of those EP's, so we can introduce this artist to the Rootstime readers.
The first one is 'Watching clocks' with 4 songs ,including the title track.
You may describe his tunes as acoustic folkrock, the lyrics deal with matters of the heart , which is experiencing positive as well as negative facts of life. There's a song about being in love for the first time, another one about troubles caused by love, failure of a love- relationship is also a theme he handles .Just like many other singer/songwriters A F is concerned by the work of similar artists. In his case Ryan Adams,Neil Finn,N Young ,Nick Drake.Though his songs are not only a pale imitation of his idols' work .There's a personal touch in each of his tunes thanks to some loops or some guitar riffs or even because he uses a voxcoder.Does this mean that all the titles are good ones?Unfortunately the answer is no.If I were AF ,I would have waited a little longer with a song like 'Something to believe in' before releasing it ,it has to ripen ,why didn't he put it on a next album? But no quibbling, this less good feeling is blown away with a track like 'The Golden Hour',it really swings.
As for the last song 'I won't look down' ,it 's a great track.
The second EP 'Behind closed doors' has got 6 tracks ,it has a larger range of styles. The opener 'Déjà vu' is a fine, sensitive song with puzzling piano or guitar lines. The guy playing the piano is Loz Bridge, from the band Suburbia,he gives A F a helping hand for some of the tracks. The titletrack is a rocking beatsong. You can hear a succession of electronic loops or guitar riffs in 'Do you stop for car crashes?'It reminded me of Depeche Mode or Duran Duran.
'The Alchemist' is a real slow tune with nice guitar. You can hear that this is almost a liverecording and only one take was necessary to put it on the record. You can feel emotion and sensibility in AF's voice.
As for me, this last song is the best I heard from AF on both EP's.Anyway the stuff is good enough to look forward to the release of a first full cd of this young and promising British singer.
Come on Andrew ,don't make us wait too long...
